Prayer Strengthens

"Successful marriages are established and maintained on principles of prayer."

President Monson and his wife were given some of the best advice on their wedding day by their sealer in the temple. He said to them,

"May I offer you newlyweds a formula which will ensure
that any disagreement you may have will last no longer than one day?
Every night kneel by the side of your bed. One night,
Brother Monson, you offer the prayer, aloud, on bended knee.
The next night you, Sister Monson, offer the prayer, aloud,
on bended knee. I can then assure you that any misunderstanding
that develops during the day will vanish as you pray.
You simply can’t pray together and retain any but the best
of feelings toward one another."

I cannot think of a better piece of advice to give two people who are just starting their lives out together. My husband and I have first handedly experienced the miracle of this advice. No matter what the disagreement or misunderstanding, when we kneel to pray together at the close of our day, that misunderstanding doesn't matter anymore. It isn't even in our minds. As we reminisce on the day we had and share our gratitude for the things that we have, we do not once even think about our small tiff. As we pray together, we are strengthened and united with the Lord. Prayer is an amazing thing and it brings couples closer together than they could on their own.

"Drawing on the powers of heaven through prayer is a powerful
resource available to couples that can make a good
relationship better and can heal a faltering marriage."

As you begin your marriage within the covenant of God through the temple, remember that there are three people involved in this marriage. Christ is the center and husband and wife work together to create a triangle of love and respect, faithfulness and unity. With Christ as the center of the marriage there is nothing that you can't get through as long as both people are equally yoked with each other and with God.

Through prayer, couples are able to overcome the adversary and bring themselves and their families closer to the Savior and each other. Prayer is a bond between heaven and Earth. It is a way that we can speak with our Heavenly Father and Savior and ask for help when we are in need but also to give thanks for the things that we have. There are so many times that I have asked for help and I have been given guidance through prayer. Our Father in heaven loves us so much and He wants to help us with all things. He is just waiting for us to ask.

"A “sanctified” relationship ought to be a happy relationship as
people go to great lengths to protect and
preserve that which they perceive to be sacred."
